What the chart measures
Each value is the percentage of a country’s population using the internet. It is not a count of users. This is a selected comparison of six countries, not a global ranking.
The source has six observed years in this example: 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2023. Motion between those points is visual interpolation, not additional survey data.

Internet adoption: questions about the data
- What does internet adoption mean in this chart?
- It is the percentage of a country’s population recorded as using the Internet, not the number of people or subscriptions. The source is ITU’s World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database, distributed through World Bank indicator IT.NET.USER.ZS.
- Which countries and years are included?
- This example selects Brazil, China, Indonesia, India, Mexico and Nigeria, at observed points in 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020, plus 2023. It is a six-country comparison, not a complete world ranking.
- Are the values shown for every year in the animation observed data?
- No. The underlying example contains six observed years only. Intermediate animation frames visually interpolate between those points and should not be read as additional annual measurements. Download the CSV to inspect the labelled observations.
