For example: how did population change in India and China over the same years? This is a question to investigate, without an included dataset or claimed result.

One measure, two named entities

Use the same unit and definition, such as population in people, with comparable reference dates. Check both sources and coverage. Do not mix total counts with per-person rates, or mismatched reporting periods.

A comparison, not a wider total

The split is relative to the two non-negative values combined. India and China alone do not represent world population. Call it a share of the selected total only for quantities that can be added without overlapping their scopes.

Keep the limits visible

Check gaps and duplicate observations: unknown is not zero. Negative values cannot have negative Versus bar widths. The animation adds no measured observations, explains no cause, and does not establish which entity performs better.

After adding reviewed data intentionally, open Preview → Chart → Chart Type → Versus. On mobile: Preview chart → Open chart settings.
In Fields, map Time Column or Order Source to the period, Order → Ascending for forward time, Entity Column to the name, and Value / Metric Column to the common measure.
Choose Fields → Data Filtering → Filter by Column with the entity column; in Values to Show, keep only your two entities. Without that restriction, Versus can choose different contenders by current value. Review Fill Missing Values and Cumulative Sum against the intended meaning.
Use Labels → Chart Title / Subtitle for both entities, unit, and period, and Footer / Source for the actual source. Keep names and values readable. Associate native flags with countries or relevant, rights-checked images with other entities.
Choose your design and format, then inspect Preview at viewing size, including very uneven values and a few frames before, during, and after dense transitions. A brief crossing is normal if readability recovers and movement stays coherent. Wait for Saved, then reload and check before export.

For sharing, follow the native format, Universal safe zone, and export guide. Use Export → Export Chart and open the downloaded MP4 at phone size. Free exports retain the watermark. Each composition needs its own Preview and received-file checks.

Common questions about animated versus chart maker

How do I keep the same two entities?

Use Fields → Data Filtering → Filter by Column with your entity column, then Values to Show to select only the intended pair. Versus takes up to two candidates by current value; importing more entities can change the contenders. Left and right follow entity identifiers, not a manual side selector.

Does the split show market share?

The split compares the two non-negative values against their combined value. It is not a share of a wider market or population. Only describe a share of the selected total when the quantities can meaningfully be added and their scopes do not overlap. Rates and averages generally do not form such a total.

Can I use negative values or missing observations?

Versus clamps negative values to zero for bar width, so it is unsuitable for a signed comparison. Zero has no bar width; when both sides are zero the divider uses a neutral split, not a measured share. An unknown observation is not zero. Review source gaps and Fill Missing Values; consider Line for signed values.

Can each side have its own image and effects?

Associate flags or rights-checked images with the entities and use the native series color and image controls. Labels, timing, theme, and effects use chart settings; this page does not promise separate effect controls for each side. Logos require appropriate usage rights.
