Practical guide · Idea to chart
Turn an idea into a clear chart request
Start with one question your viewer can understand. Define what you compare, when, and in which unit. Then use the native fields to request a proposal you can check.
1. Make a vague idea specific
“Show the biggest countries” leaves both the measure and date undefined. Ask instead: “How did internet use, as a percentage of population, change in Mexico, China and Indonesia between 2000 and 2023?” This is a question to investigate, not a claim about the answer.
- Question: changing rank, a trajectory, or a comparison at one date?
- Entities: name the countries, companies or categories; say whether this is a selected group or a complete ranking.
- Period: start and end dates for a trend; one reference date for a snapshot. Decide the intervals you need, then check what is returned.
- Unit: people, %, USD billions, or another defined measure. State the denominator, currency and definition when relevant.
- Available data: identify the original source or your reviewed CSV. State gaps and comparability limits; never turn an unknown into zero.
There is no separate question or source field in Generate Dataset. Use them to refine Metric to track or Ranking topic, keeping the request concise. If you have exact data, use the native file import instead.
2. Adapt a request to the native fields
Illustrative requests only: these are not generated datasets, verified findings or promises of source coverage. Use Copy beside each field, or select and copy its text, then adapt it. Paste each value into its matching field, rather than the whole brief into one input.
Metric over time
Compare countries over time
Question: How did internet use change in these three countries?
The accepted Internet Line example includes a sourced CSV. If you want those exact observations, import that file rather than asking AI to reproduce it. Open the accepted examples and CSVs →
Chart choice: Try Line for trajectories or Bar for changing ranks. Compare the same percentage unit; subscriptions and people are different measures.
Metric over time
Compare companies over time
Question: How did annual revenue change for Alphabet, Meta and Netflix from 2018 to 2024?
All three report in USD with a December 31 year end. Adapt the company names or years, then recheck their sources, units and fiscal calendars. This request is illustrative: named sources do not guarantee AI access or correct interpretation. If you already have a reviewed table, upload it. Prepare your own source table →
Primary sources: SEC annual facts were checked for 2018–2024; the 2024 reports explain the consolidated revenue definitions. Review the filing references for each year.
- Alphabet: annual facts (USD) · 2024 Form 10-K
- Meta: annual facts (USD) · 2024 annual report
- Netflix: annual facts (USD) · 2024 Form 10-K
Chart choice: Try Line for trends or Bar for rank changes within this selected group. These are reported company totals, not a worldwide ranking or like-for-like business models. Check revenue definitions and changes in business scope; nominal USD is not inflation-adjusted.
Ranking snapshot
Compare at one point in time
Question: Which selected countries have the highest internet-use share at this date?
This is a selected comparison, not a worldwide top three. Check whether each country actually has an observation for the requested year. An empty date requests a current ranking; it does not guarantee current source coverage. Check what a ranking really says →
Chart choice: A snapshot is static. Try Bar for a value comparison; it cannot show a race through time without observations for multiple dates.
3. Use the existing ChartGlow flow
- Open New chart, sign in if asked, then choose Generate with AI. For an existing chart, open Data → AI Assistant → Generate Dataset (Data is the Edit data icon on mobile).
- Choose Metric over time or Ranking snapshot. A time-series request requires Metric to track and Period to cover; name Entities to compare if you want a specific group. If blank, AI chooses the entities. A snapshot requires Ranking topic; enter As of for a specific date. Topic and entity fields allow up to 500 characters each; the date/period field allows 200.
- Generate dataset requests a proposal and may use your existing AI credits. It does not automatically apply the data. Source retrieval, completeness, accuracy and intervals are not guaranteed by the request.
- Read the returned preview and available source references. Choose Create Chart only when you intend to create from that proposal, or Replace current data when intentionally replacing an existing chart’s table. Edit request or Close lets you leave the review without applying.
If the request status is unconfirmed, use Check AI Tasks to check that same request. Do not submit a second request to resolve an unknown status. Close does not cancel work; same-tab recovery has limits, so keep the original tab open.
4. Check the data, then choose the presentation
The generation preview shows only a few rows. Check the original sources and the full table in Data before publishing: entities, periods, units, missing values, duplicates and any conversions. An AI result or a Verified label is not independent confirmation. If you cannot verify a figure, leave it out or use a reviewed source table.
Choose the chart type in the native Chart controls: Line for trajectories or Bar for rank comparisons. A prompt does not set your theme, images, layout or export settings. Customize those in the editor and check Preview.
Before sharing, check the interpretation and review the actual social video, including Universal safe zones, country flags or sourced assets, and the exported MP4. Brief crossings during a rank change are normal when readability recovers and movement stays coherent.
